Material Types Modeled in EOIR

EOIR models material types for:

  • Aircraft, missiles, ships, ground vehicles, and satellites
  • Earth surface

Aircraft, missiles, ships, ground vehicles, and satellites

You can choose from the following common surface material options:

  • Aluminum MLI (multi-layer insulation)
  • Black Thermal Control Paint
  • Burnished Aluminum
  • Gold MLI
  • Gray Body (with reflectance that you specify)
  • Silver MLI
  • Solar Panel
  • White Thermal Control Paint
  • Custom materials

The source for these material property models is NASA Reference Publication 1121, Apr 1984, Solar Absorptance and Thermal Emittance of Some Common Spacecraft Thermal-Control Coatings (PDF) .

Earth surface materials

EOIR simulates spectral reflectance for the 17 International Geosphere Biosphere Program (IGBP) Global Land Cover types plus Tundra as type 18. The data utilized to create the SRFs came from the spectral reflectance libraries of the United States Geological Survey and Johns Hopkins University. The various land cover types were created as linear combinations of simpler materials. NASA/TP-1999-209362, Surface Emissivity Maps for Use in Satellite Retrievals of Longwave Radiation (PDF) , provided a general guideline for proceeding.

You can find more specifics on surface material models in EOIR Model Description and Validation (PDF).
