Map Annotations Properties
This window is used to define the attributes of an annotation in the 2D Graphics window. To begin, click the Type drop-down list and select from among the following annotation types:
Each type of annotation has a collection of fields that you can set to define its appearance in the 2D Graphics window. The fields for each type are described in the following sections:
Text
String. Enter the text that you want to display in the 2D Graphics window in this field.
Attributes
Position
Click the Type drop-down list and select a reference type for the annotation's position. Define the Latitude, Longitude (or X, Y), and Horizontal Origin and Vertical Origin fields - where possible, depending on the reference type. The reference types are described in the following table:
Type | Description |
---|---|
Lat,Lon | Specify the location of the annotation using latitude and longitude values. Longitude values must be between -180 (left) and +360 (right) and latitude values must be between -90 (bottom) and +90 (top). If you use Lat/Lon to position the annotation, the annotation moves with the map as you change the map projection type and center point. |
X,Y | The 0,0 point for X,Y is the center of the 2D Graphics window; therefore, X values must be between -180 (left) and +180 (right) and Y values must be between -90 (bottom) and +90 (top). An annotation positioned using X,Y coordinates isn't affected by the map projection, but it is affected by zooming. |
Pixel | The annotation appears in the 2D Graphics window positioned according to the specified pixel spacing. 0,0 is the upper left corner of the 2D Graphics window. Map projection, zooming, and window size do not affect the position of the annotation. |
Pixel % | The annotation appears on the 2D Graphics window positioned as a percentage of the screen size. 0,0 is the upper left corner of the 2D Graphics window. Map projection and zooming do not affect the position of the annotation. |
Marker
Marker. Select the style of marker you want to display in the 2D Graphics window from this drop-down list.
Attributes
Field | Description |
---|---|
Color | Select the color with which the annotation will be displayed. |
Scale | Set the scale at which the annotation will be displayed. |
Rotation | Set the rotational alignment of the marker. |
Position
Click the Type drop-down list and select a reference type for the annotation's position. Define the Latitude, Longitude (or X, Y), and Horizontal Origin and Vertical Origin fields - where possible, depending on the reference type. The reference types are described in the following table:

Line
Attributes
Field | Description |
---|---|
Color | Select the color with which the annotation will be displayed. |
Line Width | Set the width of the line. |
Line Style | Set the style of the line. |
Smooth | Select to display the line with optimal visual appearance. |

Points
Polygon
Attributes
Field | Description |
---|---|
Color | Select the color with which the annotation will be displayed. |
Line Width | Set the width of the line. |
Line Style | Set the style of the line. |
Smooth | Select to display the line with optimal visual appearance. |
Fill | Select to fill the interior of the polygon. Use the % Translucency text field or slide control to set the translucency of the filled area. Translucency can be adjusted from 0 to 100 percent, where 100 percent is invisible. |
Position
Click the Type drop-down list and select a reference type for the annotation's position. Define the Horizontal Origin and Vertical Origin fields - where possible, depending on the reference type. Select Auto Compute Centroid to have the centroid of the polygon automatically defined, or clear the check box and define Center Lat and Center Lon manually - where possible, depending on the reference type. The reference types are described in the following table:
Type | Description |
---|---|
Lat,Lon | Specify the location of the annotation using latitude and longitude values. Longitude values must be between -180 (left) and +360 (right) and latitude values must be between -90 (bottom) and +90 (top). Points | This table displays the points that comprise the polygon annotation, and the latitude and longitude for each. |
Insert Point | Click to insert a point. By default the point will have the same coordinates as the point immediately before it. If there is no point before it, the default coordinates will be 0,0. |
Remove | Click to delete the point or points currently selected in the table. |
Remove All | Click to delete all points. |
Map Pick Mode |
These options allow you to work with points using the 2D Graphics window. Select an action to be taken - while this window is open - when clicking in the 2D Graphics window from the following:
