Obtaining Urban Terrain Data
You can use any of the following ways to get urban terrain data for analysis and visualization:
- The Army Geospatial Center Urban Tactical Planner database is available to U.S. government employees and contractors who have access to a classified government server. With the appropriate authorization, you can access these databases on PKI, SIPRNET, or JWICS, and view a prioritized list of cities that reflect national priorities. To visit one of these sites, cut and paste one of the following web addresses into your web browser window:
- PKI: http://www.tec.army.mil/
- SIPRNET: http://www.tec.army.smil.mil
- JWICS: http://www.tec.ic.gov
- A variety of commercial data providers can also be found on the internet, including East View Geospatial and AGI affiliate partner Precision Lightworks. Contact these providers directly for available cities and prices.
- You can create or change shapefiles containing building footprint polygons using Esri ArcGIS or Global Mapper. For more information and step-by-step tutorials on creating and modifying shapefiles, see STK Urban Propagation Extension Data Sources on the Online Data Sources webpage.
If you do not have access to these sites, you may be able to get the urban terrain data on digital media. For more information, go to http://www.agc.army.mil/.
